Cat Doors? What For?

So you’ve heard of dog doors, and they make sense. Dogs are both indoor and outdoor creatures, and need to go outside to do their business, anyway, so having a dog door seems perfectly logical. Cats, on the other hand, are often largely indoor animals, so why would you want or need to get a cat door? And how is a cat door different from a small dog door?

There’s actually very little difference between a cat door and a small dog door, which is why they are both considered and sometimes categorized as small pet doors. A cat door will likely be made of material that resists scratching, though, as a major difference between cats and dogs is that cats are typically much more likely to use their claws to cut through a barrier, whereas dogs will more often use their body mass to push through it. If you have both a small dog and a cat, however, there’s likely little need to purchase both a dog and a cat door — both pets can use the same pet door, provided you get one that fits them both.

A cat door serves two purposes for the cat. First, it gives the cat room to indulge its curiosity and explorative nature outside. Not every cat will want to spend time outside, but some will, and, in that sense, installing a cat door will provide the same convenience installing a dog door does. And, second, cats are tenacious creatures, and they will try anything to get where they want to go. If your cat wants to go outside but has no cat door, it may jump up on furniture, upset tables, tear through screens, or climb curtains in an effort to get out. A cat door in this case can save you a lot of money on repairs.
