Tips for Walking Your Cat

While you may have a small cat door that allows your cat to go outside at his discretion, there’s nothing better than being able to breathe in the fresh air and soak up some sun by going for a walk. While dogs are usually the pets that are trained to walk using a leash and harness, cats are just as capable (and fun!) to take on a stroll.

Here’s everything you need to know about walking your cat.

Use a Harness
Cats are known to be able to fit into the smallest of places. This often makes traditional collars problematic when taking your kitty outdoors. To keep your pet safe, invest in a harness and leash combination that gives your cat the freedom to roam without the risk of him slipping his collar and running off.

Start Slow
Outdoors walks are new to your cat! To avoid sensory overload, start with small walks, and then work your way up. Stay close to the house to ensure your cat remains comfortable. Over time, you can slowly take longer walks further away from home. The key is to let your cat take the lead and let you know when he’s ready to head back home.

Listen to Your Cat
Taking your cat outdoors is enriching and great exercise. Cats love smelling new smells and seeing all sorts of objects roll and move around outside.

Physical and mental benefits aside, give your cat the opportunity to head out for a walk but don’t force it. If your cat just isn’t interested, that’s okay!

At the same time, you’ll also want to pay attention to your cat’s behavior. If he starts to seem agitated or afraid, it’s time to go back to familiar territory. The outside world is a big space (especially to a cat!), so give your pet time to acclimate to the new environment.
