Pet Doors: Your Buying Guide
So, you’ve decided to make an investment in comfort and convenience for you and your pet. Now, how can you select the perfect pet door for your pet and the home? Here is your buying guide.
Choose the Right Location
The ideal place for a pet door is somewhere convenient, yet out of the way. You can choose to put it in a people door, sliding glass door, or even a wall. Choose a spot out of direct sunlight (which can damage the plastic), and somewhere not likely to get blocked accidentally.
Select the Mounting Type
With your location in mind, you can choose the type of door you need. Wall-mount, door-mount, and glass-mount pet doors are all available. Also, choose whether you will do it yourself, or hire an installer to put in the door.
Look for Quality Materials and a Tight Seal
When choosing the door, look for sturdy, high-grade materials that will last a long time. Beware of flimsy plastic and mounts. Higher quality materials and construction mean that the door won’t have to be replaced anytime soon.
Consider a Door With Security Features
Modern pet doors come with security features, including the ability to lock the door when not in use, and electronic sensing doors that only open via the sensor built into a special electronic pet collar. These collars do not shock the pet! They merely work as an unlocking mechanism for the door.
Consider the Pet’s Full-Grown Size
It’s tempting to buy a small door when your pet is small, but you need to consider the full-grown size of the animal when buying. With mixed breeds, when the eventual size is uncertain, opt for a larger door just in case.
