List of Unusual Pets that Are Legal to Own
Not everyone wants a cat or a dog. Some people prefer something a little more exotic. Even so, many pet owners find that some exotic animals can use the same tools as average pets, like litter boxes and dog or cat doors. While there are many exotic animals that are legal to own, not all of these animals are legal to own in every state. Even if they are legal in your state, local codes and ordinances might prevent you from owning an exotic pet. In fact, they might prevent you from owning an average pet, depending on where you live and your local ordinances. The best thing to do is check the laws in your area before getting any kind of pet. Otherwise, it’s always fun to at least browse exotic pets.
Skunks
Skunks really can be as fun to have as pets as any cat or dog, In fact, some of their characteristics are remarkably similar to cats. Some skunks have even been known to take well to litter box training. The problem is that many states don’t allow the ownership of skunks. Another issue is that one of the first things that people do when they get a skunk is to have the scent gland removed, which is completely understandable. However, since that is the animal’s most prominent defense mechanism, it can never be returned to the wild once that gland is removed. It’s something to keep in mind before you decide to befriend one of these fuzzy creatures.
Emperor Scorpion
This may not be the most cuddly pet ever, but it certainly is one of the most interesting. Scorpions have limited social skills when it comes to people, so it’s best to go slow and get it while it’s young, so that it can be used to being held. However, it’s still a scorpion and still comes with a stinger on its tail. That means you don’t want to startle it or offer it so much stimulation that it becomes anxious and stings you. The sting isn’t likely to cause you any serious damage, but it isn’t exactly a bonding moment, either.
Tarantula
With all the spider memes on social media today, it’s a wonder that these eight-legged beings are ever thought of as pets. Yet, there are those who prefer the company of spiders to people and, in particular, to the exotic tarantula. They aren’t expensive pets, but they can get quite large for a spider, so it’s best to have a tank that allows plenty of room to grow.
Wallaby
Cousin to the kangaroo, the wallaby is definitely not one of the most common pets. The biggest trait that every potential wallaby owner should know about is its ability to escape just about anything. This isn’t the kind of pet that you keep in a cage. It needs plenty of room to run and jump. Speaking of running and jumping, don’t expect your privacy fence to hold this pet in. In fact, you’ll need to secure a taller fence to the ground so it can’t get under the fence, either.
There are plenty of exotic pets, some of which are small, tame, and so trainable that they can use the cat door just like a cat would. At the same time, there are often special circumstances and regulations when it comes to these pets. Be sure to talk to your veterinarian, as well as local law enforcement, to learn the details before getting one of these pets.
