How to Keep Other Animals from Using Your Dog Door

Pet doors are great to install when you want to give your pet the flexibility to come and go as he or she pleases. However, one drawback some pet owners experience is that of uninvited guests getting into their homes, like stray pets, skunks, raccoons, rodents, snakes, and even the occasional bird. There are different things you can do to help reduce the likelihood of this occurring in your home.

Pet Doors

  1. Fence in the area around the door. For instance, if the door is installed on the back of the home, you could fence in part of the backyard, which can deter most types of unwanted animals from being able to access the door.
  2. Do not keep food or water near the door. One reason some animals try to get into your home is when they smell pet food. Make sure to keep food and water far away from the door.
  3. Install an electronic door. There are doors that will only open when activated by a collar your pet wears and which remains locked the rest of the time.

  1. Lock the door when the pet is not outside. For non-electronic type doors, it is recommended to lock the door anytime your pet is inside.
  2. Use multiple doors. Another option, if you have an attached garage, is to install two doors—one from the home and into the garage and the second one so the pet can get outside. You could also use two doors for a fenced-in backyard, with one door installed on the home and the second one installed in the fence’s gate.
  3. Elevate the door off the ground. You can also elevate the door a few feet off of the ground to deter some animals. Just make sure there is a small landing for your cat to jump onto or a ramp for your dog to use to access the door.
