Keeping Your Pet Safe in a Natural Disaster
In case of an emergency, it’s important to have a disaster plan for your pet and your family. A cyclone, fire, earthquake, or flood can mean you’ll need to evacuate and possibly be separated from your pet. Even a pet door can help, but here are a few more suggestions.
Plan in Advance
There may be no warning of an impending disaster, so make sure your pets are microchipped (which can help locate them after being separated), have up-to-date collars and tags, and keep a leash and/or pet carrier near the front door. Also:
- Arrange for a safe haven such as a boarding kennel, animal shelter, or pet-friendly hotel or motel.
- Choose a designated caregiver, such as a friend or relative who lives nearby that you trust.
- Store a few days of pet food/bottled water so there’s enough until you can get out to purchase more.
Get an Emergency Pet Alert Sticker
A rescue alert sticker notifies rescue workers and others that pets are inside your home. It should be placed near your front door and include the type of pets, how many, and the name and number of your veterinarian. Write “evacuated” on the stickers if evacuating with your pets.
Have Your Emergency Supplies Ready
Pet food and medications should be in your supply kit. Also include familiar toys and other items, medical/vaccination records, and a duplicate collar, leash, and ID tags. Your kit should have a current photo ID of your pet, first aid supplies, two bowls, waste clean-up supplies, and contact information for you, your veterinarian, and pet care organizations.
Prepare to Shelter in Place
If you and your pet are going to shelter at home, find a safe interior room with no windows. Know where your pet likes to hide when scared and ensure they have access. If heavy furniture or vents are accessible, close them off to protect frightened animals. Also, make sure there are no toxic plants or chemicals around.
Install a Pet Door
A dog door or cat flap can allow your pet to escape from danger. It can be installed near your patio or backyard. The right-sized door for cats, small dogs, or large dogs can be found on the Australia Pet Doors website. Place your order online or call 0437-644-330 today to learn more.
