How to Train Your Outdoor Cat
Cats love to roam and to be free, but cats don’t have to spend all of their time outside in order to be happy and entertained. In fact, most domesticated cats spend most of their time indoors. While the great outdoors offers plenty of space to run, jump, and climb, it also presents a lot of risks.
The good news is that you can train your outdoor cat to spend more time indoors. Giving your cat the option to do both ensures that everyone is safe and happy! Here’s what you need to know about training your outdoor cat, including the use of a sliding door pet door.
Start Slow
You don’t want to make the change from outdoors to indoors too quickly. Be sure to give your cat enough time to acclimate to his new indoor surroundings. Some cats will adjust quickly, while others need more time to get used to the indoor space.
To encourage your cat to spend more time indoors:
- Feed your cat inside.
- Offer plenty of interactive toys and play time.
- Provide room for your cat to climb, rest, and to relax.
If your cat is the attention-getting type, be sure to give him plenty! This is another way to show your cat that being inside isn’t so bad after all.
Teach Your Cat to Come When Called
You want the peace of mind that your outdoor cat isn’t too far away from home when he’s outside. You also want to know that your cat will come home when you call him.
Start by moving a small distance away from your cat and then say his name. When calling his name, ring a bell or crinkle a bag, as this acts as an auditory cue. When your cat comes, reward him with a treat. Continue this training and move farther away from your cat each time.
Use a Pet Door
You don’t want to completely cut your cat off from being able to go outside. With a pet door, you can give your feline the option to go where he wants. With a pet door, you can give your roaming cat the option to come indoors as needed. A pet door for a sliding glass door is especially helpful when the weather and/or temperatures aren’t ideal for your cat.
You can train your cat to use the sliding door pet door by easing him through the door or the flaps. Use lots of treats and, once your cat goes through the door, reward him with a tasty morsel and plenty of attention.
