Fun Ways to Exercise Your Dog

We all love our dogs, but, let’s face it, sometimes we’re a bit apt to overindulge them. Couple that with the fact our lives are always busy, and it can make for an unhealthy dog. If your dog doesn’t have a pet door so he or she can get outside during the day, these fun exercises will help you both get the exercise you need.

Doggy Tag

Just as you may have played tag as a child, you can play this great game with your dog. Head out to the local dog park or to the backyard and teach your dog this game. Together you can both get some great cardio.

The Oldie But Goodie – Fetch

This one has been around through the ages. Find a stick or grab a toy, and get in some dog training and exercise all in one. Your dog will be happy to have your attention, and you’ll be glad your dog is getting some needed exercise. A word of caution here: You may need to start with small rewards to train your dog to fetch. Make sure you choose healthy treats, and don’t overuse them, or you may be negating the exercise your dog is getting.

Backyard Obstacle Course

Grab some cones, make some hills to climb, get creative. You could even try some low hurdles and tunnels. Then put your pup on a lease and lead him or her around. Before you know it, your dog will be so excited, they’ll be running out the dog door at the mention of playing outside!

Doggy Seek

This doggy version of hide and seek can get creative. Play this inside or out. Start by hiding some treats or a favorite toy, and then encourage your dog to find it. It’s a quick and easy way to get your dog moving.

Therapeutic and Aerobic

Does your dog have back problems or other joint issues? If so, then swimming or hydrotherapy might be just the thing. This is a great activity for all dogs, but especially for those with the aches and pains of growing older. The two of you can hop in the pool to get a fantastic workout and still have plenty of fun splashing around.

Not Your Normal Walk

If you and your pet already walk every day, you may want to take it to the next level. While you’re out on your usual walk, use the objects around you to create an improv obstacle course. Have your dog jump over or crawl under benches, run around trash cans, and balance across logs. This will keep you both amused on your usual path.

Stair Climber

Work on your legs and your dog’s legs at the same time. Clip on your dog’s leash, and then walk up and down a flight of stairs together. Try to mix it up by encouraging side stepping and high stepping, alternating with regular steps. By the time you’re done, you’ll both be ready for some water.

Fun with Flyball

This one isn’t for the weak of heart. Flyball is a high energy competitive sport. Dogs are assembled into teams for something like a human relay race. Dogs race down a course that includes hurdles, and the dogs must carry a tennis ball without dropping it. Additionally, they must not start before their teammate crosses the line. This activity encourages discipline, teamwork, and a healthy amount of exercise. This is the perfect workout for an energetic dog.

The Bottom Line

Whether your dog is a young pup or getting on in years, they still need exercise. While installing dog doors for your pet is ideal, you may not live in a situation where this is possible. Either way, it’s important to make sure your dog gets daily exercise to stay healthy.
