The Five Dog “Personality Types”
Dogs are intelligent creatures that are capable of many emotions. As researchers learn more about the way canines interact, the more they uncover about their habits. Many believe that by understanding your dog’s individual personality, you can better comprehend his behavior; from bad habits like begging, to hiding or other defensive actions. Most dogs can be categorized as one of five common “personality types.” Read on for more info and how to properly manage each personality type:
Confident and Independent
Dominant pups are natural pack leaders and often feel secure with their surroundings. Usually, their confidence is indicated through body language, which is why they also make great show dogs. If you suspect your dog might have a bold personality, be careful not to use harsh discipline or training, as it can cause independent dogs to develop aggressive tendencies. Calm and consistent training is the best way to keep a confident dog happy and healthy.
Shy and Timid
Dogs that are shy can be bashful around loud noises, strong training commands, and other uncomfortable situations. Owners of timid dogs should use encouragement and positive reinforcement to increase their confidence levels. Remember that shy dogs often act this way due to improper handling, perhaps from a previous owner. Be patient if you’ve just adopted a frightened dog, and give him plenty of time and space to become comfortable.
Laid Back and Happy
Happy dogs are fun pets because they’re always friendly and excited. However, this personality type can have its downfalls. Dogs that are laid back tend to have less training and may possess bad habits like jumping on people or wandering from their owners. A friendly dog with limited training is also less likely to understand potential harm, which could mean approaching a large or aggressive animal without understanding the consequences. Adopt a proper training regimen to keep your pup from becoming too laid back.
Aggressive
When dogs are too independent, they often resist human leadership and become destructive or aggressive. Sadly, most combative pets have been bred to react this way, due to rough handling, poor living conditions, and even isolation or abuse. All dogs need proper care and socialization from a young age in order to prevent threatening behavior. If your dog becomes dominating, begin proper training at once to manage his demeanor. Without preventative measures, over time the dog may become difficult to handle.
Adaptable
Generally thought of as the “ideal” dog, this personality type is usually obtained with proper training. Adaptable dogs are laid back, yet have respect for their owners and follow training commands. Not only does this type make great family pets, but they are also excellent candidates for therapy dogs.
What personality type best defines your dog? The more you understand your dog’s behavior, the easier it is to identify problem areas that can be improved with training. For example, preventing escapes through pet doors, or stopping nipping and biting.
