Should an emergency arise where you are unable to detect your dog’s heartbeat, follow these steps to perform pet CPR on your animal:

• Place the animal on a flat surface with its right side resting on the surface.
• Place one of your palms on the dog’s rib cage near the area of its heart and put your other palm on top of that palm.
• Press the rib cage in a downward motion. Do not bend your elbows when doing this. Make your compressions firm and quick, but also be mindful of the level of force you are applying, particularly for smaller dogs.
• Perform compressions for one fourth to one third the width of the animal’s chest for a count of one. Then let go for another count of one. Keep this up at a rate of 80 compressions per minute.  (For smaller dogs, perform 100 compressions per minute).
• Breathe into your dog’s nose once for every five compressions performed. If you have a helper, provide artificial respiration for every two compressions performed.
• Should the animal not improve after 10 minutes, CPR has unfortunately failed to be successful, and you can stop.
