Common Cat Behavioural Problems and Solutions

Training isn’t only for dogs. Many cats also need guidance in order to adapt to their home and environment. Otherwise, common feline problems can crop up, often a result of boredom or lack of stimulation. Luckily, most cat behavioural issues can be quickly adjusted using the following tips:

The Destructive Kitty

If your cat loves to scratch sofas or claw carpets, look into getting a scratching post (or several). You can use catnip to draw attention to their new toy, and be sure to use verbal praises and treats to reward good behaviour. While taking the time to get adjusted to new scratching posts, use a water bottle to gently mist your pet if they return to familiar furniture for scratching.

The Early Riser

Does your cat purposefully make noise in order to wake you up each morning? He or she may need more attention. Try added playtime, or adding a cat flap to give your pet the chance to wander and explore whenever they’d like.

The ‘Scaredy Cat’

Some cats are shy and spend most of the day hiding under beds or in closets. To help your cat become more comfortable with humans, try providing enclosed spaces in shared rooms of the home, such as temporarily adding a box or hamper in your living room. That way, your cat can hide while adapting to social situations.

The Litter Box Troublemaker

If your cat refuses to use their litter box, it could be due to a variety of factors. For example, the type of litter used, or the location of the actual box. Try switching up the location to see what sticks, or trying a new brand of litter if all else fails.

Behavioural issues in cats could stem from boredom or a lack of independence. Try installing a pet door in your home in order to give your cat free range to come and go as they please.
