How to Train Your Pet to Use the Pet Door
Installing a new pet door is a great way to accommodate your pet, by giving them easy access to the outdoors. It’s also a bonus that you won’t have to open the door every time they need to go out. Most pets are smart, but it’s still a new concept for them to be able to go through a door instead of it having to be opened for them like they have been trained.
With your new pet door comes some new training for your pet. Teaching them to use the door will make having the new door totally worth it. This training process will only take most pets a few short days, but here are some tips that could help you in the process:
- 1. Take the Flap Off
When showing your pet that they can go through the door, either take the flap off or pull the flap out of the way so that your pet can see through the door.
- 2. Gently Guide
Depending on how your pet reacts, you can gently push them through the door. If your pet is a great listener, then you might want to try going outside and calling for your pet to convince them to come to you.
- 3. Reward
Once your pet goes through the door, reward them with a treat or a belly rub.
Soon enough your pet will be brave enough to push the door flap open on their own and be able to roam freely from inside to outside.
