Three Factors to Consider When Installing a Pet Door
Installing a pet door in your home is a helpful step in convenience for your pets as well as for you. When pets can go in and out of their own accord, your life will be more peaceful, and your beloved pets will not be stressed out. So what do you need to know when looking for a pet door? Here are three considerations to keep in mind.
Firstly, the size of your pet. This may seem fairly obvious, as you clearly want a door that’s big enough to fit your pet through easily rather than forcing it to squeeze. But bear in mind that pets do grow, and may put on weight even after attaining full adult size! If you mistakenly install a pet door for your puppies that won’t accommodate them at full size, you may have to buy and install a whole new pet door. Find out how big your pets will grow to, and then add a few centimetres of door width and height just to be safe.
Next up, the materials the door will be made from and whether to use flexible flap or solid flap pet doors. This decision will be somewhat based on the climate you live in. If the temperature stays relatively constant, having a flexible flap pet door should be fine; if the weather and temperature changes drastically throughout the year, it might make sense to go with a solid flap pet door.
Finally, consider the location of the pet door. This will depend on the layout of your home and how permanent you need the pet door to be. The pet door should be convenient to your pets and to the fenced-in yard they will go out into, so if there is a designated “pet space” in your home, the pet door should be placed in or very close to that space. If you plan for the pet door to be permanent, you can consider installing it in your exterior wall or a permanent door; if not, installing it in a screen door might be a better option.
